NMIT 2nd Mates

Nelson Marlborough Institute of Technology (NMIT)

Nelson, New Zealand

2nd Mates Course

Course Title:

Diploma in Nautical Science (Level 6)

This qualification is an approved training programme for MNZ Watchkeeper Deck (or IMO STCW II/1 Officer of the Watch).

Eligibility Requirements:

  • Deck Cadets with more than 12 months sea service on vessels > 500 GRT whilst having completed the ISF TRB / MNTB TRB UK or the DG Shipping, India TRB. DNS and UK HNC / HND pre-sea course from India are acceptable to MNZ as pre-sea course.
  • Deck Ratings (Tr. OS, OS, AB or Bosun) with 36 months of sea service or more on vessels > 500 GRT.
  • You should have 6 months of documented bridge watch-keeping duties.

IMA Chennai Students:

Please note that IMA Chennai TRB is not accepted by Maritime New Zealand. Hence, you are advised to fill the ISF Training Record Book on ship if you wish to do your exams in New Zealand. If you have already signed off from the ship, please purchase an ISF TRB and get the tasks signed by your company superintendent. Then, you will need to submit both the IMA Chennai TRB and the ISF TRB when booking a seat in the college.

Prior academic qualification for e.g Class XII Science, Class X, etc., is NOT a requirement for giving the 2nd Mates exams in New Zealand if following the 36 months route. Documentary evidence of minimum 36 months of sea service is the only requirement if following this route towards MNZ Deck Watchkeeper certification. However,a good knowledge of Maths and Science is considered essential to clearing the written examinations in New Zealnad. There is NO equirement of any Training Record Book (TRB) to be completed on board ship if following the 36 months route to OOW (2nd Mates) certification.

Download a completely filled up ISF TRB by clicking on the link: ISF TRB Part 1 ?? ?? ??ISF TRB Part 2

Shipboard Administrative Assistant (SAA):

Working on board doing administration tasks is not considered work in a ?deck capacity?. However, MNZ may consider whether relevant deck work has been carried out if proper documentation is provided that includes:

  • details of the amount of time spent on deck activities and the deck duties undertaken
  • separate details of any navigational watchkeeping undertaken (and whether under supervision)
  • a master?s testimonial or reference
  • information provided by the company detailing the allocation of deck work and work in your signed-on capacity.

SAA who have a Bridge Watchkeeping certificate from the ship and can get company seatime letter specifying the deck duties done (hours worked) have a good chance of being considered eligible by MNZ. To further improve your eligibility chances, SAAs are advised to also complete the ISF Training Record Book for Deck Cadets whilst on ship.

Documentary Evidence of Sea Service:

  • Minimum of 36 months of sea service stamps on your CDC (non Indian CDC for e.g. Panama, Liberia, Bahamas, Thai, etc. are also acceptable) for Deck Ratings. For Deck Cadets, you will need 12 months of sea service stamps on the CDC.
  • You will also need company sea-time letter for a minimum 36 months of sea service. If you have done your sailing with different shipping companies, you will need to take sea-time letter from all those companies so that your total sea-time is atleast 36 months. For Deck Cadets you will need company sea service letter for 12 months.
  • The 6 months of bridge watch-keeping certificate from the Master (or the company) must mention that you have kept bridge watch-keeping duties every day as assistant to the main watch-keeper whilst the vessel was at sea.

Format for Bridge Watch-keeping Certificate and Company Sea Service Letter are as given below:

Please note that Diploma in Nautical Science (DNS) and BSc Nautical Science pre-sea courses from India are not approved by the MCA, UK. Hence, students who have done the DNS or BSc Nautical Science course also need to complete a minimum of 36 months of sea service on merchant ships before they can give the 2nd Mates exams in the UK. New Zealand offers them a chance to do the 2nd Mates CoC after 12 months of sea service.
